International Anti-Corruption Day 2020

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 09 December 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23658

That the Parliament acknowledges that 9 December 2020 is International Anti-Corruption Day; recognises that the day emphasises the societal damage that results from corruption; supports the sentiments of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, that corruption is "criminal, immoral and the ultimate betrayal of public trust"; understands that the COVID-19 pandemic has, due to the nature of the crisis and the demand for a speedy response, led to a weakening of oversight and transparency; believes however that the weakening of oversight and transparency creates public distrust at a time when public trust is paramount, and regards the challenging and rooting out of corruption as central to the recovery from COVID-19.
