Top Award for Inverclyde’s Watt Institution

  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 07 December 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23623

That the Parliament notes that the Watt Institution, which incorporates the McLean Museum and Art Gallery, Watt Hall and Watt Library, was recognised at the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) 2020 Design Awards; understands that the institution was honoured with a special award for conservation after undergoing a £2.1 million revamp; appreciates that the Grade A-listed building dates back to 1800s but underwent extensive internal and external refurbishment by Collective Architecture; acknowledges that the Watt Institution also remains in the running for an award from the Royal Incorporation of Architects Scotland after being shortlisted in March 2020, but that, due to COVID-19, the ceremony has been delayed until next year, and believes that this investment has helped regenerate the facility and boosted Inverclyde’s tourism offering.
