UHI's Contribution to Local Economy

  • Submitted by: Rhoda Grant, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 28 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23165

That the Parliament congratulates the staff of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) on news that a new report by Biggar Economics has shown that UHI contributes £560 million to the local economy and supports 6,200 jobs across the region; notes that the report found that, for every £1 spent on UHI, it contributes £4 back into local economies across the Highlands and Islands; understands that increases in staff and student numbers since 2010 have contributed to these results, and considers this welcome news in light of UHI’s upcoming 10th anniversary of gaining university status in February 2021.
