The Rich Get Richer

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 12 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23032

That the Parliament notes a recent report produced by PWC and UBS regarding the reported increasing wealth of billionaires throughout the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that, since its outbreak, their wealth has increased by 25%, reaching £10.2 trillion, which is higher than any other point in history, the previous high of £8.9 trillion being reached in 2017; welcomes details that billionaires are donating more than ever, with 209 having publicly committing £7.2 billion during the course of the pandemic; however, considers that, as much of the rise in this wealth has been because of the pandemic, with billionaires involved in healthcare seeing their wealth increase by an estimated 50.3%, more of this wealth should be redistributed by tax or other means; agrees that the inequalities that have been highlighted by the pandemic are morally wrong, and believes that wealth must be more evenly spread around the world and across nations.
