S5W-19757: Mike Rumbles (North East Scotland)

Scottish Liberal Democrats

Date lodged: 5 November 2018

To ask the Scottish Government how many trains in operation under public service contracts in each of the last 10 years have had toilets that disperse waste onto the rail tracks.

Answered by: Michael Matheson 15 November 2018

The Scottish Government do not hold this information. However all of the current fleet of around 300 trains with toilets, which are leased by Abellio ScotRail (ASR), have had tanks fitted to retain waste since the end of 2017.

The fleet of 26 upgraded High Speed Trains which will undergo refurbishment works at Wabtec in Doncaster will have tanks fitted and the first upgraded train has been operating successfully for the last few weeks with positive passenger feedback. As more arrive they will enable the replacement of the Classic HSTs which will start to enter service later this month as an interim measure.
