S5W-18958: Tom Mason (North East Scotland)

Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party

Date lodged: 21 September 2018

To ask the Scottish Government what its position is on the recommendation in the report, The Best Start: A Five-Year Forward Plan for Maternity and Neonatal Care in Scotland, which was published in January 2017, to reduce the number of neonatal intensive care units from eight to three.

Answered by: Jeane Freeman 2 October 2018

The Minister for Public Health and Sport welcomed all of the recommendations in The Best Start report in a statement to Parliament in February 2017, and at the same time announced the creation of an Implementation Programme Board for the Best Start recommendations, chaired by Jane Grant, Chief Executive of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. A Sub Group of this Implementation Programme Board is considering the recommendations on the model of neonatal intensive care, and is undertaking an options appraisal. When this is concluded, recommendations will be made to Ministers.
