S5W-18795: Kezia Dugdale (Lothian)

Scottish Labour

Date lodged: 13 September 2018

To ask the Scottish Government when it last ran a campaign in relation to parental physical assault, and what plans it has to run another.

Answered by: Maree Todd 27 September 2018

When the law was last changed in this area in 2003, the then Scottish Executive issued a leaflet called "children, physlcal punishment and the law". At the moment, there is some information on the physical punishment of children on the Scottish Government website: Section 2 of the Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Bill currently before Parliament would place a duty on the Scottish Ministers to promote public awareness and understanding about the proposed change in the law. If section 2 should be enacted by Parliament, the Scottish Government would consider what steps would need to be taken accordingly.
