S5W-12193: Neil Findlay (Lothian)

Scottish Labour

Date lodged: 25 October 2017

To ask the Scottish Government for what reason the flu jab voucher scheme for staff that is being run by the Scottish Prison Service is being provided by a private provider and not the NHS.

Answered by: Michael Matheson 7 November 2017

I have asked Colin McConnell, Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service (SPS), to respond. His response is as follows:

SPS considers that flu immunisation is an important factor in maintaining the health of staff to ensure continuity of service provision. However, as the majority of staff are not eligible for free NHS flu vaccinations as they do not meet the Scottish Government’s 2017 seasonal flu vaccination programme ‘at risk’ definition, an immunisation programme is provided through the SPS Occupational Health provider, Optima Health. Those who do meet this definition are encouraged to visit their own GP to be immunised.
