Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party

Date lodged: 18 July 2017

To ask the Scottish Government what proportion of armed forces veterans in prison enter employment within 12 months of leaving.

Answered by: Michael Matheson 10 August 2017

I have asked Colin McConnell, Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service, to respond. His response is as follows:

This information is not held by SPS. However, I can advise that every individual in our care who is identified as an army veteran is offered a pathway of support which may, where required, include employability support.

Armed forces veterans in our care who seek employment opportunities can access various sources of assistance including:

Training grants from Poppy Scotland;

Lifeworks offer armed forces veterans in custody a 5 day motivational course to prepare for employment;

SPS also has close links with Community Job Scotland, who have staff dedicated to working with armed forces veterans under the age of 29;

the Department of Work and Pensions have staff dedicated to working with armed forces veterans and provide services within Scottish prisons; and

the Careers Transition Partnership provide armed forces veterans in our care with employment advice.
