Date lodged: 23 June 2017

To ask the Scottish Government what action it has taken to implement the recommendations in The Best Start: A Five-Year Forward Plan for Maternity and Neonatal Care in Scotland.

Answered by: Shona Robison 19 July 2017

Following publication of ‘The Best Start: A Five Year Forward plan for Maternity and Neonatal Care in Scotland’ on 20 January 2017, Jane Grant, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde was appointed on 21 February 2017 to lead the implementation of the recommendations. An Implementation Programme Board has been established and met for the first time on 9 June 2017.

At the first meeting, the Programme Board agreed the high level approach to delivering the 76 recommendations. NHS Boards will be empowered to drive forward recommendations at local level where possible and practical to do so, and we have identified a number of recommendations suitable for local level delivery. Boards have identified local delivery leads and we will begin work with them shortly on development of local delivery plans.

Sub groups will be created to take forward implementation of the remaining national level recommendations. The sub groups will be leading on development of plans for delivery of these recommendations.
