S5W-09279: Mark Griffin (Central Scotland)

Scottish Labour

Date lodged: 17 May 2017

To ask the Scottish Government whether the young carers allowance will be an extension of the carers benefit for the purposes of section 22 of the Scotland Act 2016.

Answered by: Jeane Freeman 30 May 2017

Any extension of the carer’s benefit may be introduced through secondary legislation, using powers contained in the Social Security (Scotland) Act, if the Parliament agrees to pass this legislation and grant those powers. The Scottish Government is currently considering the introduction of a Young Carer’s Allowance to provide extra support to young people with significant caring responsibilities.
