S5W-06574: Linda Fabiani (East Kilbride)

Scottish National Party

Date lodged: 26 January 2017

To ask the Scottish Government what analysis it has carried out on the impact on EU nationals living and working in Scotland of the reported fivefold increase in the number of EU nationals detained in immigration centres since 2009.

Answered by: Alasdair Allan 3 February 2017

The Scottish Government has not carried out any analysis on the impact on EU nationals living and working in Scotland of the reported fivefold increase in the number of EU nationals detained in immigration centres since 2009. Immigration, and compliance with immigration law, is fully reserved to the UK Government.

However, following the EU referendum, it is more important than ever to stand up to negative rhetoric surrounding immigration and to strive to provide a welcoming and tolerant society for all those who have chosen to make their home here. The Scottish Government will continue therefore to press the UK Government to deliver a more flexible and humane immigration system that meets Scotland’s needs.
