Biography

Overview

For almost 50 years I have been a self-employed farmer in Aberdeenshire, and have built a successful business from a modest start. I became interested in politics through my membership of the Scottish National Farmers' Union, and was vice-president for the organisation for two years from 1998 to 1999.

I also served on the board of Scottish Natural Heritage for six years.

What motivated you to become an MSP?

I was an Aberdeenshire councillor for 5 years before being elected to Holyrood in 2016. I never imagined I would become an MSP, but I got involved in the Better Together campaign and took part in many debates. I debated with Nicola Sturgeon, Richard Lochead and Eilidh Whiteford, among others.

This focused my political interest and made me even more determined to do all I could to preserve the Union and fight against the SNP.
