Question
To ask the Scottish Government what the unemployment rate has been in (a) North Ayrshire and (b) Arran in each year since 2016.
Answer
Model-Based estimates of unemployment levels and rates based on the Annual Population Survey and Claimant Count information are published https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/ . Model-based unemployment estimates are not available below local authority level, and therefore for Arran.
The following table provides the latest model-based unemployment estimates for North Ayrshire local authority in each year since October 2015 – September 2016:
Model-Based Unemployment Levels and Rates, North Ayrshire, 2016 to 2020
Year | Level | Rate |
Oct 2015-Sep 2016 | 4,800 | 7.9% |
Oct 2016-Sep 2017 | 4,200 | 6.8% |
Oct 2017-Sep 2018 | 3,600 | 5.8% |
Oct 2018-Sep 2019 | 3,800 | 6.0% |
Oct 2019-Sep 2020† | 3,800 | 6.0% |

Notes:
1. Unemployment estimates cover those aged 16 and over.
2. Levels rounded to the nearest hundred.
3. Rates are calculated on unrounded figures.
† - Annual Population Survey (APS) responses are weighted to official population projections. As the current projections are 2018-based they are based on demographic trends that pre-date the COVID-19 pandemic. ONS are analysing the population totals used in the weighting process and may make adjustments if appropriate. Rates published from the APS remain robust; however, levels and changes in levels should be used with caution.
