New Year Honour for Jamie Kinlochan

  • Submitted by: George Adam, Paisley, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 13 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23856

That the Parliament congratulates Jamie Kinlochan on being awarded a British Empire Medal in the 2021 New Year Honours in recognition of his service to the care experienced community during the COVID-19 pandemic; recognises that Jamie's vision created a national helpline that any care experienced person of any age could contact for support with financial assistance initially made available from Who Cares? Scotland's reserves, then complemented with funding from Scottish Government and other funders; acknowledges that, between March and July 2020, Who Cares? Scotland distributed £145,000 in financial support to over 850 people, ensuring that they could buy essentials such as food and fuel, linked people with local services and carried out casework to help people overcome barriers to additional support; further acknowledges that initial advice to stay home and reach out to family for support may have created specific challenges for care experienced people; considers that the swift creation of this national service overcame this and had significant positive impact for many people, and commends Jamie for his thoughtful and dedicated contribution to improving the lives of care experienced people.
