Supporting the Doddie Aid Challenge

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23845

That the Parliament welcomes the Doddie Aid Challenge that is running until the start of the Six Nations Championships on 6 February 2021; recognises that the mass participation challenge is raising vital funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which was founded by the former British Lion and Scottish international rugby star, Doddie Weir, in 2017 to support research into a cure for motor neurone disease (MND); notes that the challenge involves the five teams from the old Scottish Inter-District Championships, Edinburgh, Glasgow, The South, North and Midlands and Scottish Exiles; understands that anyone can sign up and take part by donating to join their district and then recording all miles they complete as part of any form of exercise on the campaign-specific app to count towards their team’s overall score; acknowledges that high profile stars will also be turning out for each district and contributing to their team’s efforts to become the Doddie Aid Inter-District Champions; recognises the phenomenal take-up of the challenge in Orkney as part of a very strong start made by the North and Midlands team, which is currently out in front; encourages others to get involved wherever they are and however they want to put in the miles to support the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation’s important work to find effective treatments for MND, and wishes all five districts the best of luck as they continue to battle it out in the weeks ahead.
