Vaccinate to Educate

  • Submitted by: Neil Findlay, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23844

That the Parliament supports the campaign launched by the NASUWT, Vaccinate to Educate, which calls on all teachers and education staff to be prioritised for the COVID-19 vaccines to save lives and help get children back to school; believes that such a move is essential to help protect teachers and pupils and to allow the country to move to a situation where children and students are back in schools and colleges, to help minimise any disruption to their education; considers that it is in the national interest that all teachers and education staff are prioritised in the roll-out of the vaccines; understands that they are unable to practice social distancing from their pupils and few are provided with essential PPE as part of their day-to-day roles; notes that many schools continue to operate with very high number of children and young people on site; believes that, with provision for younger age children and for pupils with additional support needs, teachers and education staff face additional risks that are comparable to those that exist in the provision of health and social care; considers that it is right that health and social care staff are prioritised, but believes that teachers and education staff must also be identified as a priority group for the vaccines.
