Support for Glasgow Student Forum

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23842

That the Parliament notes the latest calls from the Glasgow Student Forum (GSF), which represents over 50,000 further and higher education students, student associations and student unions in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, for greater financial support from the Scottish Government; is concerned by reports that students continue to be unable to access all of the digital and specialist equipment that they require to fully participate in their education; notes with further concern the impact that reduced social interaction and connection due to COVID-19 is having on students’ mental wellbeing and the quality of their education; supports calls from the GSF for the Scottish Government to commit greater financial support towards blended learning, which includes, but is not limited to, digital access and inclusion for students; further supports the GSF’s calls for £5 million capital asset grants for specialist equipment with equitable distribution to all institutions; notes with interest that the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales has allocated £50,000 to every student association in Wales, and urges the Scottish Government to follow the example of Wales and financially support student associations so that they can meet the increased demand placed upon them to provide a robust programme of social and wellbeing support.
