The Café Royal, Annan, Supporting the Community

  • Submitted by: Joan McAlpine, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 15 December 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23704

That the Parliament congratulates The Café Royal in Annan on the success of its Chip In To Tuck In scheme, which sees the restaurant offering free small meals and a drink to older people and children who are hungry and/or are experiencing financial problems; understands that more than 100 meals were served by the team throughout November 2020; notes that it has been so successful, with donations from generous community members and businesses, that it is being extended to the end of January 2020; notes the restaurant's owners were motivated to start the scheme after seeing children and older people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and were approached by a person who donated £400 to help it provide meals for those in need; acknowledges that the café matched this donation, and further donations, which have enabled the scheme to establish a £1,200 fund that has now reached £2,500; understands that it prides itself on offering this welcoming service with respect and dignity; notes that it provides free face coverings and hand washing facilities on the pavement outside to mitigate against the spread of the virus; praises the community spirit of the team in preparing potatoes for the hot meals that are distributed to vulnerable people in the community by the charity, Kate’s Kitchen; understands that The Café Royal has been at the heart of the town for over 50 years and sees this initiative as an opportunity to repay the support of the community in these unprecedented times, and commends its team for their public-spirited action throughout the pandemic.
