Antonine Wall Project Recognised Across Europe

  • Submitted by: Gil Paterson, Clydebank and Milngavie, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 24 November 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23452

That the Parliament congratulates the Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project on being the only UK heritage initiative chosen to be included in the European Guide for Cultural Heritage in Action as an example of best practice of cultural heritage in action within the EU; understands that the project was picked from thousands of entries following an application made by Historic Environment Scotland in partnership with the five local authorities that the Antonine Wall runs through, West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and Falkirk; notes that the £2.1 million project to bring the fascinating story behind the wall back to life aims to improve awareness of and engagement with the UNESCO World Heritage Site among local communities along the line of the wall and with visitors from further afield, through things such as Roman-themed play parks being created at sites near to the wall so that children and young people can explore and play while finding out about its history; recognises the hard work of those involved with the project, and commends their efforts to bring this important part of Scottish heritage back to life for generations to come.
