Scottish Railway Preservation Society Receives Further Lottery Funding

  • Submitted by: Angus MacDonald, Falkirk East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 23 November 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23442

That the Parliament welcomes the additional £234,000 of funding for the Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS), which is based in Bo’ness, from the National Lottery Heritage Fund; understands that this additional funding brings the total received to £975,500 for the Steaming Ahead project at the Museum of Scottish Railways, incorporating the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway; notes that this additional funding will help to further the project by constructing a new engineering facility, which will be used to care for a steam locomotive collection and other rolling stock, and will also help to train volunteers and apprentices while improving the visitor experience with a new level walking route added to the proposed engineering facility; considers that the retention and conservation of engineering achievement is important to the heritage of Bo’ness and its contribution to the local and national economy; recognises the crucial part the area has played in Scotland’s engineering success, with it being home to James Watt’s cottage, the birthplace of steam locomotive technology; congratulates SRPS on securing this further funding, and hopefully looks forward to the project’s completion in 2021.
