Concerns Regarding Assisted Dying

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 15 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23052

That the Parliament notes that the Dying with Dignity Bill 2020 has moved to its committee stage in the Irish Parliament; encourages more people to engage with the issues related to the reasons for calls for a change in the law regarding assisted dying; understands that a recent survey by the British Medical Association (BMA) has found that half of doctors want a change in the law and that more than half support a positive or neutral stance for the BMA, and remains concerned that permitting assisted dying could, it believes, be open to considerable abuse, including by putting pressure on older relatives to end their lives by bringing about feelings of guilt among them that they might be a burden on their families and society and through budget pressure to reduce the costs of care for older citizens by ending their lives prematurely.
