Scott Newman, Youngest Winner of the Colin Montgomerie Trophy

  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 15 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23049

That the Parliament congratulates Scott Newman on winning the Royal Troon Junior Club Championship and becoming the youngest golfer to win the Colin Montgomerie Trophy; recognises that the Clydeview Academy pupil from Gourock defeated the reigning champion, who was three years his senior, and is now ranked third in Scotland for this age; notes that Scott’s name will now be displayed next to legendary Open winners, Tom Watson and Arnold Palmer, on the club’s championship boards; understands that he started playing golf at just six and, as well as being a member of Royal Troon, he also plays at the West Kilbride and Gourock where his dad is the club’s development officer; acknowledges that Scott has played in many national and worldwide competitions, from coming 17th in the US Kids Golf European Championships when he was eight to playing in the Polish National Championships; hopes that Scott’s success encourages other young people to consider taking up golf, and wishes him all the best for the future.
