Invest in the Jobs of the Future

  • Submitted by: Pauline McNeill, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 08 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22997

That the Parliament believes that both the UK and Scottish governments will need to intervene to avoid mass unemployment the COVID-19 pandemic progresses; considers that significant government spending will be required over the coming years and must be used strategically with a long-term vision for creating good-quality, well-paid, sustainable jobs; believes that the period since the 2008 banking crisis has been one characterised by increased financial insecurity, precarious jobs and squeezed living standards; recognises what it sees as the need to create an environmentally sustainable economy during an anticipated rise of automation that may threaten many of the jobs that exist today; urges governments to reverse the trend of the last 12 years and prepare for future challenges by investing now; considers that public transport infrastructure and housing are two areas in which vast investment is needed and could be made to create the jobs that people in Scotland need and deserve, and calls on the Scottish Government to consider creating a commission for jobs to tackle what it considers this serious problem.
