TSB Bank Closures

  • Submitted by: Bob Doris, Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 02 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22935
  • Current status: Achieved cross-party support

That the Parliament notes plans by TSB to close 73 branches in Scotland and 164 across the UK; is concerned that this decision will now mean that not only is there no bank in Springburn town centre, which it believes will hamper ambitious regeneration plans, but also none at all in the Maryhill and Springburn constituency and considers that this is effectively the final nail in the coffin of retail banking services in the area; notes calls urging TSB to reconsider each and every closure decision and to take into account the local circumstances in each instance, including the impact on, among others, older customers, people who are digitally excluded and local businesses; does not believe that post offices offer an adequate alternative and are not like-for-like replacements; notes calls for banks to innovate with more face-to-face retail banking offers, such as varying opening hours and consideration of co-location and new business models, particularly in deprived and rural communities, and further notes the view that the UK Government should urgently review the regulation of, and conditions placed on, retail banks to ensure that a network of locally accessible branches exist across Glasgow, Scotland and the UK.
