Don’t Stop the Music

  • Submitted by: Pauline McNeill, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 05 October 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22932

That the Parliament considers the ban on all music, including background music, in pubs and restaurants to be an unnecessarily cautious measure that contributes to the difficulties faced by the hospitality sector; believes that Scotland is the only country in the world to have implemented this particular restriction; understands that business owners in the hospitality sector consider this restriction to be particularly damaging to trade, as the atmosphere without background music is considered to lessen the enjoyment of visiting venues, and discourages customers from visiting pubs and restaurants, and calls on the Scottish Government to put an end to the background music ban and consider what flexibility can be accommodated to allow background music to be played.
