Gary Lloyd Wins UHI Higher Education Student of the Year

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 29 September 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22869

That the Parliament congratulates Gary Lloyd, who lives in Orkney, on winning the University of the Highlands and Islands Higher Education Student of the Year award; understands that Gary, who has recently graduated with a first class BA (Hons) archaeology degree, won the award in recognition of his outstanding academic accomplishments and also for his novel way of approaching archaeology and enthusiasm for his subject; recognises that Gary became the first undergraduate student to secure a placement at the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre and his dissertation study into the wear patterns on Iron Age glass beads was nominated for the British Prehistoric Society dissertation prize; acknowledges that Gary’s accolade makes it two years in a row that Orkney College UHI students have been successful at these awards, after Orkney students won both the higher education and postgraduate awards in 2019, with the postgraduate award winner also being an archaeology student; believes that this is testament to the hard work of the students in their chosen fields and the excellent support provided to them by lecturers and teaching staff at the college; congratulates Gary once again on this well-deserved achievement, and wishes him every success in his postgraduate studies in archaeology and beyond.
