Edinburgh Direct Aid Supporting People Affected by the Beirut Port Explosion

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 August 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22560

That the Parliament recognises the Scottish charity, Edinburgh Direct Aid (EDA), for its vital work to assist those affected by the explosion at port in Beirut on 4 August 2020; understands that EDA deployed a team of carpenters and other construction workers made up of Syrian refugees trained in EDA’s vocational training centre in Arsal, Lebanon, to repair windows and doors destroyed by the blast, and to carry out other repairs to ensure the traumatised local people have shelter; understands that working conditions have been particularly challenging given the need for precautions against COVID-19, the midsummer heat and patchy access to supplies and communications in the city, and notes that people can find out more about EDA’s efforts, and its emergency appeal for support, at edinburghdirectaid.org.
