Earth Overshoot Day

  • Submitted by: Claudia Beamish, South Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 05 August 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22363

That the Parliament notes that 22 August 2020 is Earth Overshoot Day, the day when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that period; recognises that over 80 countries marked Earth Overshoot Day last year; notes that this year sees a 9.3% reduction of humanity’s ecological footprint as a direct consequence of COVID-19-induced lockdowns around the world, but considers that this sudden shift is no long-term solution; recognises the campaign by SEPA, the California-based Global Footprint Network and the University of Glasgow, in partnership with The Herald, to highlight the business case for "a future by design, not disaster", and recognises the roles of a progressive, independent environment protection agency, progressive news media, climate organisations such as 2050 Climate Group and business leaders, including Dr Marie Macklin CBE and her Halo Kilmarnock urban regeneration project.
