Supporting Scotland's Local Media Sector

  • Submitted by: Jamie Halcro Johnston, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 15 July 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22274

That the Parliament recognises the importance of Scotland’s regional and local broadcasters, radio stations and print and online media, particularly as a source of reliable local information throughout the COVID-19 pandemic; recognises that access to informed and accurate local news is essential to many communities across the Highlands and Islands, and, in particular, for some of the most isolated and vulnerable residents; appreciates that local radio, newspapers and magazines are under increasing financial strain as a consequence of coronavirus, with access to physical copies of newspapers restricted, and advertising for TV, radio and online reduced, and thanks all those working across regional and local media for their hard work during this crisis, as well as all of the public who continue to buy a paper, listen to radio or subscribe online.
