  • Date lodged: 19 October 2020

Question

To ask the Scottish Government, in light of reports that other countries are using negative ion ionisers to tackle COVID-19, what research it has undertaken on the use of these, and whether it plans to look again at their use in this regard.

Answer

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) has set up a Short Life Working Group to consider the evidence surrounding the efficacy of “air cleaning” devices. They had their first meeting at the end of October 2020, but at this point there is no indication as to how long it will take them to arrive at any conclusions or to decide if they can be used in a healthcare setting.
