Question

To ask the Scottish Executive whether it has a strategy in place to target road safety campaign advertising on areas that suffer from high levels of fatal accidents.

Answer

No. The Scottish Executive provides funding to Road SafetyScotland (RSS) for the development of key road safety education initiatives andpublicity messages. Campaigns by RSS aremainly undertaken on a national basis and focus on the main causes of casualties. These include issues such as speeding, drink and drug driving, seatbelt wearingand young drivers. RSS is also looking at the development of campaigns addressingmotorcyclist safety and rural road safety.

Local authorities have a statutoryduty to take appropriate measures to prevent accidents on roads for which they areresponsible. This includes the dissemination of information and advice relatingto the use of roads.
