Economy and Fair Work Committee

Inquiry - Just Transition for the North East and Moray

Overview

Scotland's economy and the skills and industries that drive economic growth both now and in the future are a key part of the Committee’s remit.

There is currently a target of 2045 for Scotland to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero.

Industry is the second highest carbon emitting sector in Scotland after transport and the Scottish Government aims to reduce emissions by around a third by 2030.

Committee inquiry

The Committee agreed to hold an inquiry into a Just Transition to net zero for the North East and Moray.

The Committee wants to look at how we can support, incentivise and de-risk this transition in a way that benefits both companies and individuals.

Remit

Crucial to the future of this area is having enough jobs to sustain employment levels, and that workers have the skills to take up those roles. The Committee want to hear from those in the area on what support is needed to achieve this.

The Scottish Government set up The Just Transition Fund to “accelerate the development of a transformed and decarbonised economy in the North East and Moray.” The Committee want to know if this fund is achieving that stated aim.

The Committee also wants to know how well placed and supported Scottish businesses are to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the transition.

Your views

As part of the inquiry, the Committee undertook a call for views which closed on 26 September 2023. Evidence sessions are scheduled to start in November 2023.
